The teacher said something very intriguing in my drawing class today, it was something that both suprised me and made a hell of a lot of sense. He said, "On the paper, you are God, and the sheet is your universe".
He was using this in the context of our job being to create a character, or world, within the page and to do justice to it. Just the imagery of that concept, I have to admit, I find very beautiful. Its, I suppose, a romantic concept. On the paper, the world can be anything we want it to be. We are in control of that world which we create, even if the world we live in is beyond our control. I suppose in a way this is part of why art can be so relaxing... because there is comfort in the concept of being in control of our own reality, even if that reality only exists upon a page.
